MP3’s birth was in 2011 when Martin and Ellie Lyons realised that, as the parish had two vicars, we had a couple of panto dames on our hands and suggested to them that they be the ugly sisters in Cinderella. However ultimately karma did bite Mr Lyons on the behind as, when the curtain rose, it was him donning one of the frocks.
Cinderella was a success raising over £2,500 for Great Ormond Street Hospital. More than that, we all realised that we enjoyed both each others’ company and dressing up and pretending to be other people. Therefore the one-off of Cinderella launched the parish amateur theatre group MP3, named after the 3 churches in the Merton Priory parish.
In the summer of 2012 we produced a one act play, The Hypnotists Are In The Garden, written by Carol Crowther, the mother of an MP3 member.
With each show our number has grown with lots of new faces appearing in Aladdin, our 2013 pantomime, which raised money for Faith In Action in Merton, a local charity who's aim is to help with local homelessness however they can; from the immediate practicalities of a warm meal and clean clothes through to wider help and recovery.
In September 2013 we hosted a Late Summer Show, showcasing the talents of members and friends, alongside a delicious three-course meal.
Our 2014 Pantomime was Dick Whittington, Written and Directed by Emma Spencer and raising money for Macmillan Cancer Care.
Summer 2014 was a busy time with both the production of Barabbas, a new play by Jonathan Lomas, and another sucessful Summer Supper show to celebrate the centenary of St John the Divine, High Path, one of the three team churches.
Our 2015 Pantomime, Treasure Island, was performed at Holy Trinity Church on January 30th and 31st and February 1st. The charities chosen for this production were Merton Mencap and SPEAR London.
Snow White was the 2016 Pantomime, performed at St John The Divine, from the 29th to the 31st of January. Money was raised for The Samaritans.
2018 saw us perform "Jack & The Beanstalk", written and directed by Emma Dewhirst, raising money for Refuge.
In 2019 we performed Pinocchio, written and directed by Bruce Warman, and raised money for Christian Care in Merton.
And work is not underway on out 2020 offering - Puss in Boots!
We are always after new people who either just want to come along to our theatre trips, or want to be stars on the stage, or do one of the many back stage jobs. Of course, we also have members who are not part of the parish but just want to join in. If what you have seen interests you and you would like to get involved please either e-mail us on firstname.lastname@example.org or like us on facebook.
